JAMES ALLAN was the son of Richard ALLAN and
Elizabeth REDPATH, born in 1757 at Langton,
Berwickshire. He married Jannet CRAIG at
Whittinghame, East Lothian in 1783. They had at
least 2 children. The whole family ended up in the
Stow area. James ALLAN was a shepherd, likewise his
son. James and Jannet ALLAN are buried with their 2
children and other family members in Stow with a
tombstone erected. The son James ALLAN married in
1821 and farmed at Torsonce Mains, Stow in 1838,
and " Wooplaw ", Stow in 1851. He was a tenant
there, with 500 acres, employing 11 labourers. He
retired from farming, and went to live in
Gattonside by at least 1861.He died at Gattonside
Village, Galashiels in 1888 aged 93. Agnes ALLAN
married James WITHERSPOON in 1821. They had 4
children. They went to the USA where James
WITHERSPOON died. They returned in 1837. Agnes
lived with her daughter Janet and husband in 1851
at Stow, and later with her brother James and 2nd
wife at Gattonside in 1861. This family used to
have regular contact with their cousin Richard
ALLAN from "Newlands", Gifford in the 1830's. At
that time, two of Richard's sons lived within a
couple of miles of James ALLAN the son.They were
Richard ALLAN (Bow Farm), and David ALLAN ( Stow,
& "Halkburn/Hawkburn Farm" ).
