Richard ALLAN was the youngest of 3 known sons
of Richard ALLAN and Elizabeth REDPATH. He was born
in 1765 at Duns, Berwickshire. He married before he
was 22 years old, and had at least three children
born in Langton Parish. His 1st wife Jean SHEAR ,
and their son Thomas both died in November 1799. He
was a shepherd, and worked in Gordon for at least
42 years from 1795 - 1837 when at age 72, the
master he worked for told him that " he was not fit
to go out to fair or market, nor to go out in a
stormy night, and he thought by this time he had
plenty to keep him". He left Gordon, and went to
look after the parks at his son Richard's farm -
"Byerwalls" at East Gordon. While there, " he got a
cow, and a stone of mill a week, which was better
than doing nothing". He married three times, his
first two wives Jean SHEAR and Agnes HART both
died. He had no children by his 2nd or 3rd wife.
Richard stayed at Byerwalls until his death in
1840. Although having lived in Gordon Parish for
over 45 years, Richard was buried with his 3 wives
and two young children in the old Langton burial
ground.
