*** FAMILY HISTORY ***

Richard Allan was born in Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland. The only son of Andrew ALLAN & Sibbilla RICHARDSON, the family moved several times during his early years. He married Elizabeth Darling in 1804 at Greenlaw. He was a shepherd at Halliburton farm near Greenlaw, and brought up a family of seven. He was a very simple man, and a spiritual Christian, as evidenced by letters, and the character of all his family members. Sometime around/after 1818, the family moved to Yester Park/Newlands farm near Gifford, Haddingtonshire. This farm was a sheep-grazing property. These properties are of undulating nature, and fairly open. The area is North of the Lammermuir ranges, a bare and bleak strip of mountains running across the country.Elizabeth died in 1837 to the great sorrow of the family. Deaths occurred all over Berwickshire at the same time, whole families being laid up and not able to help each other. At his death in 1861, only his unmarried children Margaret and James were still in his house. The legacy of information regarding these Allans and their nearest friends/relatives are courtesy of an abundance of letters from Richard Allan to his son Andrew between 1836 and 1859. There is still an old disused cottage on the Yester Park estate which was possibly used by the Allans. The nearby village of Gifford has Richard and Elizabeth's tombstone in the churchyard. Of interest in the town is the Goblin Ha' Hotel supposedly built with the help of goblins, and Yester House.
