*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
Elizabeth ALLAN was the 3rd child of
Andrew ALLAN and Sibbilla RICHARDSON. She was born
at "Langtonleas", Langton Parish in 1784, and
married George GRAHAM in 1814 at Melrose. Her
husband was a shepherd , and they lived at
"Ladhopemuir",in the former Ladhope Parish of
Roxburghshire in 1836. They farmed in this area
probably for over 45 years.During this time they
corresponded and visited with her brother Richard
ALLAN'S family living at Greenlaw and later
Gifford. Only a few years before her death,
Elizabeth was widowed, and lived with her son and
daughter in Galashiels where she died in 1861. She
had several children. Son John was a shepherd with
his father at "Ladhopemuir" farm in 1851. He was at
"Allanshaws" farm near Stow in 1857, and then was
described as a butcher in Galashiels in 1861, and
his sister Cecilia lived there with him. Son
William had a shop (trade unknown), in 1836 at 128
Canongate, Edinburgh. In a letter to his cousin
Andrew ALLAN, he mentions a brewery next door where
worked Andrew ALLAN'S cousin by surname of NISBET
(from his mother Elizabeth DARLING'S side). The
brewery is now gone except for some rear steps. Son
Andrew GRAHAM married with at least seven children,
lived at "Langshaw" farm, Ladhope Parish in 1851.
******* Of children and grandchildren named
Cecilia, this might possibly be linked to
"Sibbilla" RICHARDSON. On Elizabeth ALLAN'S and her
sister Margaret's death certificates, their mother
is denoted as Cecilia RICHARDSON. The two names
sound similar, and could lead to confusion.
Informants often got details of grandparents wrong
on death certificates, and very often had never
even met them. Elizabeth's sister Jean FOGGO also
had a daughter named Cecilia. But why they would
name their own daughters Cecilia and not Sibbilla
is a good question??.There were plenty of relatives
named Sibbyla or similar spelling to surely get the
name right.
