*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
Richard Allan was son of Richard Allan and Jean
SHEAR. He was born at Choicelaw/Choicelee farm in
Langton in 1791. He came to Gordon with his parents
C.1795, and later farmed there all his life. He
married Mary GAGGIE at Gordon in 1823, and had at
least 4 children. Between 1828-1838 he was at
"Byerwalls" by Gordon, and most likely stayed there
for many years before and after. He was there
described as a "Feuar" - a person who holds a piece
of ground (a Feu), in perpetuity in consideration
for annual payment and/or other burdens. This
originally hails from the "Feudal" system of
holding lands by military service. His wife Mary
GAGGIE died in 1832, and some 19 months later
Richard married his first cousin Margaret ALLAN.
They did not have any further issue. In 1851, only
the daughter Jean ALLAN lived with her parents.
Richard ALLAN at that time is stated as being a
shepherd, proprietor of 6 acres of land. The eldest
son Richard died unmarried in 1850. Daughter Mary
married and had at least 8 children, all born in
Gordon. Some died young, and are buried in Gordon
Churchyard. Jean Allan was unmarried. Son David
Allan is elusive and as yet untraced in the Borders
area. Four generations of these Allans/Friskens
lived at Gordon between 1795 to at least 1913 (118
years). They had contact with nephew David Allan
and family at East Mains, Gordon 1855-1895. David
Allan's daughter Janet died in 1928, ending 133
years of Allan involvement in Gordon Parish.

*** There was some confusion regarding Jean ALLAN's
name. Her baptism entry on 24.7.1831 reads "Jane", and census
entries also refer to "Jane". Her tombstone though reads
"Jean".
It is more likely she was named after her paternal
grandmother Jean SHEAR
