David ALLAN was the 2nd son of Richard
ALLAN and Elizabeth DARLING. Born at Haliburton
near Greenlaw, he had left home, and was working as
a sheep dealer by the age of 27. Somewhat of a
prodigal son, David got on in the world, buying and
selling sheep for profit and making money fast. He
was distant from his family, he did not inform his
older brother Andrew of his marriage in 1837, he
did not write often to his family and his attitude
was construed as conceited. There had been
embarrassment earlier in Dec 1837, when a daughter
was born only one day before his marriage to Janet
RENWICK. "I was very sorry for it being so ill
conducted. Had it (the marriage) had been but one
day sooner it auld looked some better" his father
states in a letter. His father stated in 1858,
"David has not been in our house these three and a
half years. You see, when a man gets up in the
world, he minds not his nearest relations!". After
moving from Stow, to Lauder and then to East Mains
in Gordon, a family of 8 was brought up. First son
Richard Allan 1840-1841 died in Stow. In 1861,
Alison, Richard & Elizabeth lived in Galashiels
away from their parents. He stayed in East Mains
farm as a grazier from 1855 until his death in
1895. The farm was 380 arable acres, with 6 - 10
servants employed. Unlike most other ALLANs of the
period, David ALLAN owned the land he worked, and
his prosperity was evidenced in later generations.
