Sibylla ALLAN was the fourth child of Richard
ALLAN and Elizabeth DARLING. She married Thomas
LOGAN in 1839 at Whitekirk, East Lothian. They had
at least 3 children. The children were born in the
Whitekirk/Stenton areas of East Lothian. In 1851
census, the family was living at "Quarryford" farm
which is only a mile from her father's farm of
Yester Park/Newlands near Gifford Village. By 1858
they were living in Gordon Village. The daughter
Elizabeth married in 1873 at Dirleton, East
Lothian, and had at least 7 children. No further is
known of the family except that when Sibylla died
in 1896 in North Berwick, her husband Thomas LOGAN
was alive, and her son William LOGAN was living at
"Bankrugg",Gifford.
**** The family name Sibbilla and variations
Sibbylla/Sybella/Sibbly/Sibbaly/Sybil originated in
the first documented instance from Sibbilla
RICHARDSON of Cranshaws, who married Andrew ALLAN
in 1779. The name most likely comes from her mother
Jean WOOD's family, and was passed on to her cousin
Sibbilla WOOD who married 1777, and who in turn
passed the name on to her own grandaughter Sibbly
COWAN born 1805 . It has occurred 11 other times
down the 250 odd years in various forms, and
although no ALLANs currently have the name, four or
five instances from a female line have this name
today. It's highly likely that there are other
instances as yet untraced.
