*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
Richard ALLAN was the 3rd son of Richard ALLAN
and Elizabeth DARLING. Born in Haliburton, Greenlaw
in 1813, Richard grew up to be a shepherd like his
brothers. He was soon into farming, and at age 21,
until at least age 25 he was working as a shepherd
at Bow Farm, just south of Stow. At age 28 he
married Agnes ALLAN in Melrose. They had a family
of 3 boys and 2 girls. The family worked in several
areas. Stow 1843, Ladhope Parish 1845 - 1850,
"Colmslie" in Ladhope Parish 1851/1852, "
Williamlaw" in Ladhope Parish 1857, "Ladhopemuir"
in Ladhope Parish 1858, "Ellemford" in Longformacus
Parish 1867 -1879, and "Harehead" in Cranshaws
Parish in 1880. From 1867 - 1880 he lived only a
mile or so from his younger brother John who worked
at "Greenhope". The widow Agnes ALLAN lived with
daughter Helen CLAPPERTON in Selkirk in 1881, and
died at "Greenburn", the residence of her son
Andrew ALLAN in 1886. A monument stone erected by
the son Andrew ALLAN at Cranshaws Parish Churchyard
mentions his parents Richard and Agnes ALLAN, also
their son Richard ALLAN.
