John ALLAN was the 4th son of Richard ALLAN and
Elizabeth DARLING. He was born at "Teddlehouse" in
Greenlaw. He is first mentioned in 1837 as being
present at the house when his mother died. While
the children were weeping thinking that their
mother had died, she propped up and said, "Let me
depart in peace!!, and see that you agree one man
to another" .Around this time he worked as a
shepherd at "Middlethird" which is by Gordon. He
later moved over to Peebles-shire where he worked
at "Blackhopebyre" which is very high and stormy
ground. His wife Isabella HOGG was the daughter of
John HOGG and Margaret BURNET.This family is
distantly connected to James HOGG - "The Ettrick
Shepherd". James HOGG is one of the most famous
Scottish poets in the rank of SCOTT and Robbie
BURNS. He consistently made money from his poems,
then lost it in farming ventures. John ALLAN worked
many places after he married in 1850. Blackhaugh
1851, Fairneylees in Channelkirk Parish 1853 -
1859, Ellemford in Longformacus Parish 1861 - 1867,
and lastly Greenhope in Longformacus Parish from
1871 to 1897 . He brought up a family of 7. His is
the only branch where the name "Sibbilla" or
similar was continued.
