*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
Richard ALLAN was the eldest son of Andrew ALLAN
and Catherine DRUMMOND. He was born in Queensferry,
Edinburgh in 1833, just before his parents moved
north up to the highlands to farm. Richard's
prospects looked bleak for farming, so in 1851 he
emigrated to South Australia aboard the ship
Thetis. Richard was a shepherd on Yorke Peninsula,
Gawler and Encounter Bay S.A., then prospected for
gold at Bendigo, McIvor, Forest Creek, Fryer's
Creek and Ballarat. He later met up with his
younger brother David in 1854. Both were present in
Ballarat during the goldrush skirmish known as the
Eureka Stockade, where many miners and soldiers
lost their lives in an uprising over absorbitant
licence fees.(Richard was apparently arrested, but
released for lack of evidence). Richard married in
1855 in Adelaide S.A. to Catherine Robertson from
Stirling,Scotland. By 1857 he and his brother had
saved enough money to purchase uncleared, virgin
scrubland in Newlyn, near Creswick. The original
selection was 93 acres at 4 pounds per acre. A
pioneer in that district, he was on the original
Scrub Hill Church council along with his brother
David and father Andrew. He brought up a family of
six, with another five children dying young. In
1874 he sold out his share of land, and moved up to
the Bamawn and Tennyson districts, near Rochester,
Echuca Shire. He was Echuca Shire President
1896-97, and on the Shire Council from 1888-1900,
and his name appears on the Rochester old council
chambers foundation stone.
