*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
David ALLAN was the 2nd son of Andrew
ALLAN and Catherine DRUMMOND. Born and brought up
in the highlands of Scotland, he followed his
brother's footsteps and made for Australia aboard
the "Oliver Lang" in 1854. A spiritual Christian
like his ancestors, he wrote to his parents from
the ship docked at Liverpool, " The Sabbath is not
much regarded here. There is a band of musicians on
board and they are playing today the same as if it
had been a week day, which is truly an awful thing
to think upon it !! " . After playing the
goldfields like his brother, together they both
settled down to clearing their land selection at
Newlyn, and making a stable life for their
families. David wrote back to his family at
"Inverlair", Scotland telling them of his hard
work, and was asking them to come out and join him.
David married Isabella ROBERTSON in 1863 at Scrub
Hill,Victoria. Isabella's sister Catherine had
married Richard ALLAN, making the families twice
related!! Bringing up a family of 6, all went well
until August 1886. Their only daughter Elizabeth
fell from a horse and died. Then 23 days later,
David ALLAN''s wife Isabella drowned herself in her
despair at Western beach, Geelong, Victoria. By
this stage the two eldest sons had taken up
selection near Leongatha,Gippsland and were not at
home. The family of four men in Newlyn battled on.
Church affairs, sports and farming keeping them
busy. Their cousin Isabella ALLAN came and kept
house with them for a while. David ALLAN died in
1913 aged 77. He was a pioneer of the Scrub Hill
district, having seen the dense forest disappear
into lush farming ground. The son Richard worked the
Scrub Hill farm with his younger brother David all
his life. He was organist at the Scrub Hill Church
for many years. The youngest son Robert went to
Tasmania in 1901, and was a miner. He died aged 37
without any children.
