Richard ALLAN was the first child of
Richard ALLAN and Agnes ALLAN. Born at Stow in
Midlothian County, his parents moved several times
during his childhood. By the time of his marriage
in 1867 at age 24, Richard was a shepherd at
Ellemford Farm with his parents. Moving between
Abbey St.Bathans 1869-1870, "Harehead",Innerwick
Par 1871-1872, and "Windshiel",Longformacus Par
1872 -1886 he brought up 4 children, with 3 others
dying young. Richard ALLAN died at Windshiel in
1886 aged only 42. His daughter Agnes ALLAN also
had a son George ALLAN born at Abbey St.Bathans in
1889. He was brought up like a younger brother
within the family. By 1895 the widow Margaret SELBY
and family had moved to "Butterlaw",Swinton Parish
,Berwickshire. This was their son Richard ALLAN's
farm. It was here Margaret SELBY died in 1900 aged
59. With only the children left, the family slowly
split. Agnes ALLAN died in 1905 at "Simprim", the
farm of her brother Richard ALLAN in Swinton
Parish. It was also here that Richard ALLAN married
in 1906. James Selby ALLAN and the nephew George
ALLAN went to Newcastle,England. Margaret Selby
ALLAN had married in 1895 to John LAUDER a rabbit
catcher, and was steadily making her own family of
9 children.
