Elizabeth ALLAN was the 6th child of
Andrew ALLAN and Catherine DRUMMOND. Born in
Inverness-shire in 1844, she came out to Australia
with her parents and family aged only 16. She
married John INGLIS 10 years later at the local
Scrub Hill Church in 1870. They brought up 4
children in that same area, then in 1877, Elizabeth
suddenly died at age 33. Left a widower with 4
children, John INGLIS set out in 1882 for the
recently opened Mardan District in South Gippsland.
In extremely dense forest he fashioned a life for
himself and his children. Only a few years later,
his nephews Andrew and Alex ALLAN also came to the
same district. they would often all get together
both at work and pleasure. John INGLIS was an early
Woorayl Shire Councillor and partaker of church and
community groups. The original house stil stands
although somewhat refurbished. Of the four
children, only one offspring was produced. The
ELLIOT family who married into the INGLIS family
twice, had moved to Mardan from the Ballarat area
near Creswick. Catherine INGLIS never married. She
thought her favourite cousin Alex ALLAN to be far
too good for the likes of his wife Mary McKinnon.
In her later years whilst in a wheelchair , she
went to stay with, and was looked after by that
same Mary McKinnon.The wheels of fate grind
exceedingly small!! It's believed Andrew INGLIS
married a 2nd time, presumably after his wife
died.John INGLIS (1906) was a good friend of his
2nd cousin David ALLAN from Mardan South, In 1955
Barbara INGLIS was in the same High School class as
Geoffrey ALLAN, and many years later Paul
INGLIS(1969 - Now an accountant) was in the same
High School Grade as his friend and 4th cousin
Chris ALLAN from Mardan South.
