*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
David ALLAN was the 6th child of David
ALLAN and Janet RENWICK. He lived with his family
at Gordon East Mains until at least 1871. Around
1873 (aged 24), he entered upon the tenancy at
"Georgefield" farm, near Earlston. His next mention
was at his marriage nine years later in 1880 to
Eliza HARPER. He remained at Georgefield till his
death at age 54 in 1903 - A total of about 30
years. "Georgefield" remained with the family until
1928 for a span of about 55 years. The house now is
a beautiful 2-storey house with tennis court,
spacious drive and well groomed lawn. David ALLAN
was in the front rank of agriculturists in the
district. It was a common remark that "What Mr
ALLAN did not know about practical farming was not
worth knowing". He was a staunch conservative, and
attended local party meetings. He had a high
reputation in matters concerning breeding and
rearing of stock. He belonged to the parish
council, and was a member of the school board. Of
his sons, the eldest David ALLAN went to New
Zealand in 1903, Robert ALLAN was a farmer at
"Smailholm Mains", Kelso by 1913, Thomas ALLAN
farmed "Georgefield", then later moved to Burnhouse
Mains, Stow with his mother, and sister Christina
ALLAN. The mother Eliza HARPER died there in 1944.
After retirement, Thomas and Christina ALLAN spent
their last years in Galashiels. James Harper ALLAN
was a Bank Agent up North in Dingwall, he had two
daughters. David ALLAN, his wife Eliza and two
children Thomas and Christina are all buried in
Earlston.
