Alexander ALLAN born in 1855 at Gordon
East Mains, Berwickshire, Scotland was the 8th
child of David ALLAN and Janet RENWICK. He
emigrated to New Zealand in about 1885, and at age
30 he married Louisa BINLEY, daughter of John
BINLEY a cordial manufacturer in Temuka (near
Temura), N.Z..
On February 26th, 1885 he commenced business as
a Grain Merchant and General Produce Buyer in
premises known as Ollivier's Action Rooms, at the
corner of Waitohi and King St, Temuka. Sold was
"sugar in bags, tea in boxes and all kinds of
stores". He entered into a few partnerships, all of
which disolved fairly shortly. Thes were Ollivier
& Allan, Allan & Carter and Allan &
Velvin. He bought into a store opposite the Crown
Hotel (with John Velvin) in 1885, then in 1886 is
listed as a "Grocer and Provision Dealer". An
advertisement in the Temuka Leader March 3rd, 1889
states that Alex Allan was holding a "Clearing sale
of crockery, glassware, hollow-ware (pots, kettles,
etc), tinware, brushware and lamps, etc" as he was
giving up that branch of his business. On June
17th, 1890 was the last day of Alex Allan's General
Storekeepers clearing sale. He disposed of his
business to James Harrison.
Alex Allan who lived in Davey Street, left
Temuka on February 21st, 1891, supposedly for the
North Island of New Zealand. Some time after that
they moved to Timura where Alexander's younger
brother lived. He and his wife were 14 years into
the marriage before they had their only child
Alison in 1899. His proffesion was a "Stock Buyer"
upon his death at Balclutha in 1934.
Alexander, in all likelihood, maintained contact
with his younger brother, Andrew ALLAN, who had
also settled in New Zealand. He was the first known
ALLAN to move to N.Z.
