Richard Alexander ALLAN was the 10th child
from 11 born to Richard ALLAN and Catherine
ROBERTSON. He was the only married male from 7
males born in the family, and only himself and two
other males lived past childhood, ( Andrew died age
33, James died age 67 ). Richard moved up to the
Bamawn district near Rochester, Victoria with his
parents . He married Anne WINKLES at Bagshot near
Bendigo in 1899. Oral history suggests her father
built the first permanent house ( not a tent ), on
Bakery Hill at Ballarat. Her grandfather was Henry
WINKLES, a famous artist/engraver with studios in
England and Germany. Prior to marriage, Anne was a
primary teacher at Echuca, Echuca East, White
Hills, Pyramid Hills,Pine Grove and Leitchville.
Richard Alexander ALLAN was a farmer in those dry,
northern districts of Bamawn and Tennyson, near
Rochester. Droughts were common in that area ( The
ALLAN's would bring their cattle to their cousin's
farm for agistment, as was previously noted by the
ALLAN's in Gippsland in the 1890's and 1900's).
Richard ALLAN and family moved to Melbourne around
1916, probably because of droughts. Richard opened
the Hawthorn Motor Garage at 767 Glenferrie Rd,
Hawthorn. It also incorporated a hire-car service.
He was a mechanical Jack of all trades. He was not
particularly religious, and was a very conservative
man, especially in politics. Their house at 34
Chrystobel Cres, Hawthorn was called "Newlyn" after
the area in which the original family farm was
located, back in Scrub Hill. He stayed in Hawthorn
until his death. Richard ALLAN apparently suffered
from excruciating Sciatica, and for many years
until just prior to his death, he slept on a
"sleepout" built on the back verandah. A story also
was of how he ordered some of his wife's friends to
leave the house and never return, because of they
spoke up for the Labour Party!! Richard ALLAN was
the last of his family of 11, and also of the first
generation of ALLANS brought up at Newlyn. Of his
children, Richard and James were drivers for the
business, and Annie pumped petrol at the garage.
Annie ALLAN was unmarried. Anne Selina ALLAN lived
with daughter Annie Catherine ALLAN until her death
in 1969. Annie then moved to a senior citizens home
in Hobart, Tasmania. James ALLAN had the one
daughter Barbara who died without issue.
