David Allan was born in 1906 and attended
Leongatha Agricultural High School. After
graduating he went to Teacher Training College and
taught in several schools eventually becoming
Principal at Beaumaris Primary School where he
retired in ?
Prior to WW II he met Lesley Bennett, whose
parents were family friends of the Allans in
Creswick. He is quoted as saying "She can put here
slippers under my bead any time". Which she did
only for a few days after they married. David had
enlisted and was on his way to serve his country in
the Middle East.
He was one of the Allan/ McKinnon family
Historians and dictated the attached
"David's
Saga". He passed away in 1990 at the age of 84.
His sister, Isabel (Milner) outlived him, She lived
to be 95 years old.
As a young woman Lesley Allan worked in a
bookstore in St. Kilda.
Later on she and David were active amateur film
makers with the an amateur Movie Club that met in
East Camberwell. Many of their 8mm movies were
filmed on vacations in South & South-East Asia.
They won many awards for their movies. One of the
most successful was "Tractors in the Jungle",
depicting the work of elephants in the logging
industry.
After her husbands death in 1990 Lesley,
although legally blind, continued to live in the
Loch Street home. A home they originally purchased
over 50 years before.
She overcame many health problems and falls but
refused to move into smaller quarters. In the past
few months she had "live in" assistants, but
eventually her doctors insisted on her moving to a
convalescent facility. She was already very frail
and needed professional care. A stoke only made
matters worse. Les passed away peacefully on the
8th of August, 2011. She was 92 years of age.
