*** FAMILY HISTORY
***
|
|
Richard ALLAN was the 4th child of
Alexander ALLAN and Mary McKINNON. He went to the
Mardan South Primary School, and Leongatha High
School. Apparently quite good at the
sciences/chemistry, he was offered a placement at
the Ballarat School of Mines in 1924 by his uncle
Richard ALLAN of Newlyn. That was the year his
father died and being quite the optimist, he
decided to join his brother Jack on the farm. In
about 1918 his father had taken out a mortgage on
an adjoining 94 acres left from Mary McKINNON's
brother's deceased estate. This brought the total
farm acreage to 274. For two lads aged 16 and 14 it
must have been a huge task. They battled on working
hard and not having much besides a mother and three
other children on the farm with them to care for. (
By now David the eldest son was at teachers college
in Melbourne). But there was also tennis, football
(Aussie Rules), cricket, local dances and church to
keep things interesting. Richard married Frances
McCARTIN in 1938 and moved into a new home built in
the middle of the 94 acres. There he brought up 2
children. By the 1950's, moves were underway to
formally dissolve the working partnership between
the brothers. This was mostly completed by the time
of Jack ALLAN'S death in 1958, ending a partnership
of some 34 years. From then on there were 2
separate farms, with Richard's farm being 134
acres. Daughter Elaine was a nurse. She married Lew
FISHER, and many years later worked as manager at
the Korumburra outlet of Fisher's Timbers. Richard
ALLAN continued working at the farm until 1967,
then moved into 8 Davison St. Leongatha to
retire. He died in 1979. Son Alex ALLAN stayed on
the dairy farm until 1989 when it was sold. He
moved into Leongatha, and was a Sales Manager for
Leongatha Kitchens and Building Supplies.
