Born at Smailholm Mains in 1917, he farmed at Smailholm Mains and also "Huntlywood" near Gordon. He purchased "Aytonlaw", Ayton Par, Berwickshire on his own in 1947 and married Lilias Pollock MITCHELL in 1948. He later bought "East Reston" farm next to "Aytonlaw", which his son David Robert ALLAN now runs(1995). David Harper ALLAN gave up farming at Smailholm Mains when his father died, and sold it in 1973. The ALLANS at Smailholm Mains and Ayton Parish have been been noted for their excellent capacity for farming and breeding of sheep and cattle. David Harper ALLAN has continued to run and oversee the "Aytonlaw" farm into his late 70's with much vigour. Son David ALLAN is married with 3 children, and daughter Margaret married Chris RHODES and had 2 daughters.
